BookBug's World…

reading, writing, crocheting, living….

off the hook :)

yup, this one won’t be about reading. well, not exactly. still about the books  I guess, as the bookmarks are connected with books aren’t they? 😀

anyways. I developed a pattern for an up-cycled, heart-shaped bookmark, and I thought I’d share it here, because maybe someone else would like to try? 🙂

here it is:

Valentine’s Day Bookmark

you’ll need: yarn (pretty thick one, there is no preferences, whatever works, mine was worsted yarn) 2 colours.
crochet hook (that’d work for the yarn of your choice, mine was 4mm)
2 pop can tabs

abbreviations & stitches used in the pattern:
sl st = slip stitch
sc  = single crochet
hdc  = half double crochet
dc  =  double crochet
picot = chain 3, sl st to the base of the first chain

Round #1
make sure the pop can tabs do not have any metal elements sticking out, just 2 loops like that:

IMG_8470line them up so the same ends are overlapping, like so:

as you can see there will be 3 pop can “loops” that we’ll be working with 🙂
insert the hook at one end of the “doubled loop” of the pop tabs and do a slip stitch:

in the same pop top loop crochet the following:
2sc, 1hdc, 2scIMG_8473

in the following pop top loop crochet:
1sc, 2hdc, 2dc, 2hdc, 1slst

in the third pop top loop crochet:
1slst, 2hdc, 2dc, 2hdc, 1sc.

sl st to the first sc, while changing colour of the yarn.

Round #2.
3sc, picot, 5x sc, 2sc in each of the next 2 spots, 2x sc, sl st (right between the 2 sl st from Round #1)
2xsc, 2sc in each of the next 2 spots, 3sc, sl st to the first sc of Round #2. weave the ends.

with one yarn colour sl st in the picot at the tip of the heart. chain 45. fasten off.
with the second colour yarn, sl st in the picot. *chain 10. sl st into the 10th chain of the first colour*. repeat ** 3x. fasten off. you can addbeads at the end of the tail like so: IMG_8475

have fun! and Happy Valentine’s Day! 🙂

*feel free to ask questions in comments if something is not clear
**this pattern is not for sale, play fair and do not sell it.

  2. Emilia, I love the bookmarks. Did you make that up? Very inventive! I’ll have to msg you about how to do a hdc. That stumped me. lol
