Welcome to the world of books, photos and more 🙂
I am very thrilled to share the iterview with Ellery Adams (aka J.B. Stanley), in my “10 Question to” interview series.
BookBug : I absolutely love your Supper Club Mystery series – finally the main characters that actually gain weight while eating all the goodies described in the book 🙂 Where did the idea come from?
Ellery Adams : To be totally honest, I thought about it when I was pregnant with my son. I’d gained more than the recommended amount of weight (cough, cough) and a few months after my son was born, I decided to try The Atkins Diet. I was hanging out with a group of other women who were struggling with “body after baby”. The more we talked, the more I thought of how rewarding it was to have a group of people to gripe to and to have as a support network while I was counting carbs and trying to ignore donuts, so the Supper Club was born. As for James, I knew that I wanted to go against the norm and have a male hero. I was told by several publishers that they weren’t interested in having a female writer pen a male voice, but James was in my head and he demanded to be written, and I’ve never regretted bringing him to life!
BookBug : This might be a silly question, but will James Henry (from the Supper Club Mystery series) ever have a pet? If so – what do you think that would be?
Ellery Adams : Not to be cagey, but all I can say about this one is yes, and wait and see!
BookBug : The Charmed Pie Shoppe Mysteries combine the regular world with fantasy and all that with a cozy mystery. That’s quite a fascinating mixture. How was it born?
Ellery Adams : I have always loved fantasies. I am a big fan of Mary Stewart and I adore Arthurian legends. I knew I couldn’t quit writing mysteries to write a full-length fantasy, because the world-building alone requires so much time (just look at George R.R. Martin’s books, for example. No wonder it takes him two years per novel). I didn’t want to abandon my other series to pursue a fantasy novel, but I really wanted to spread my wings and try another genre. Luckily, my editor is super cool and she let me create this colourful blend of culinary, cozy, and fantasy in one series and to my surprise and delight, readers have fallen in love with it.
BookBug : Are there any “magical elements” in any of your other books/series?
Ellery Adams : Not all at. Some people seem to think there’s a supernatural element to the Book Retreat mysteries (based on the Amazon reviews) but I’m not sure where that’s coming from because there’s no magic there whatsoever. I do ask reader to suspend their disbelief in that series, but it’s all in the name of escapism.
BookBug : The funniest memory of your childhood would be…
Ellery Adams : Ha! Growing up with two brothers, cats, and a pack of dogs in the days when parents let kids run loose until the street lamps came on there are tons! Well, one of them would have to be when my mom had prepared the most glorious turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner and had arranged it on the platter in the kitchen for my father to carve. The rest of us (including my grandparents) were waiting in the dining room for him to carry it in. That’s when we would applaud my mother. Anyway, my dad couldn’t find his carving knife right and both of my parents were in the dining room digging through the drawers of the server when we heard a mighty crash in the kitchen. Our three German Shepherds, Yankee, Dixie, and Maxwell had somehow let themselves into the kitchen and taken the turkey off the counter. They tore the bird apart before you could say “drumstick” and we had Chinese takeout for dinner!
BookBug : Three things you absolutely can’t start a day without are…
Ellery Adams : Coffee, a good morning hug from my daughter, and the chance to pet at least one of my three cats.
BookBug : If you think about all your books – which of the characters is the closest to your heart? And – if you’d like to share it – why?
Ellery Adams : Oh, that’s a tough one. I guess it has to be Olivia Limoges from The Books By the Bay series. Olivia has been through so much and she is often misunderstood. I guess I like her the best because she’s complicated. And very human. She makes mistakes and says things she shouldn’t. But she’s so loyal and once she’s your friend she’d do anything for you. It’s too bad I just don’t let the poor woman be happy, but we can’t have that, can we?
BookBug : The ideal writing conditions for you would be…
Ellery Adams : Strong cup of coffee, music playing in the background, and telemarketers across the world simultaneously tasered.
BookBug : That one place that you’ve never been to, and would love to visit one day is…
Ellery Adams : Cuba
BookBug : Do you wish there was more magic in our regular life?
Ellery Adams : I just wish we could retain more of that childlike willingness to believe that anything is possible. Especially when it comes to women. I want my daughter to grow up truly believing that she can pursue any dream—that there are no limits. Not anymore. To me, that’s real magic. As is kindness, goodness, and love. We could all more of that on a daily basis, especially in cyberspace!
BookBug : Thank you so much for your time!
