More Beginnings – by Iris Blobel ; excerpt and review :)

♥♦♥  EXCERPT ♥♦♥

Zach Taylor’s young neighbour, Mia, let out a long sigh as she joined him on his front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool lemonade, he invited her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were weary of the unusual hot spell for the very southern Australian city.

With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and stared into the distance. “Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does it on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt.”

The dragon in question was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. There was no doubt that Mia liked school, and she enjoyed her classes. And even though English wasn’t her worst subject, it certainly was the toughest one, with Miss Peterson piling on homework one after the other.

Zach took a sip of his drink before he replied, “Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What’s that supposed to mean you’re ‘spoilt’?”

She lifted her shoulder in a slight shrug. “You know!”

Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”

Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”

Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip.

~~~Review~~~
more beginningsYet another brilliant romance by Iris Blobel! 🙂
Very engaging right from the start, with characters that have their flaws and past…
It is a book #2, but I’m sure it can be read as a stand alone (though you might be tempted to reach for #1 to fill in the blanks 😉 😀 )
I found three main threads in this book: one being the strong relationship between sisters, which is more like mother (Sophie)-daughter(Mia) at times; and which is put into a big test when Mia’s father decides to come back unannounced, causing… lets say, quite a storm in their lives. Does he really mean no harm? Is he trying to take Mia away from her sister? Or are there any other reasons? If I add the fact that Mia’s father’s existence was kept a secret… nope, not saying more.
Second thread – of course, the Baby!!! I have to admit as the plot progressed, I was getting more and more worried: will Sophie be OK? Will the baby be OK?!
And the tasty thread of Zach, and, well his love life. Or to be more exact – the question if his work (nope, not saying what it is) will ruin his chances to love and be loved…?
Phew. Hope I did not spoil anything for anyone 😀
Recommended drink: a glass of your favourite wine… for me – a rose of course!!! 😀
The New Beginnings by Iris Blobel –> my review
Two posts earlier I was doing a little promo post for “New Beginnings” by Iris Blobel. Time for my very personal review 😀
* * * *
New Beginning pic2How many of us would like to have another chance in life… to start over. Especially if the life wasn’t too kind so far…
Two sisters. Though because of the death of their mother – one more a mother than a sister… Money always short, always not enough… And then all of a sudden – a chance for a total change. 180 degree turn. Light in a tunnel, a spark in a darkness. Unexpected and seemingly unexplained inheritance changes everything…
I loved this story. Not oversweetened , captivating, with likable and believable characters. Add to that a little mystery (WHY did they actually got that inheritance, and WHO was the “giver”?), little love story (well… won’t say anything more, no spoilers here!), and the strongest possible, sisterly bond – and there you have it! A perfect summer (or winter, depending where you live 😉 )read!!!!
“New Beginnings” by Iris Blobel- promo post.
New Beginning pic1
The story is set in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, the most southern state in Australia. A most beautiful place. I went there a few years back and imagined how it would be to live in this city, how to adapt as a “non-local”, and bit by bit I wrote the story of two sisters moving there.
Obviously, I added a little romance into the story as well – so I added Mark and Zach.
This is the second edition of NEW BEGINNINGS.
The story is now a bit sexier and has also received another edit.
Literary Chanteuse’s review: “This author has a way of endearing her characters and it is easy to fall in love with them. An intriguing story with emotion, love and hope.”
Sharon’s review: “This was a very enjoyable read and it left me wanting just a little bit more. I highly recommend it.”
“Other people have to fight battles in their life as well.”
The chance to start life all over with the help of a stranger.
New Beginning pic2Twenty-two-year-old Sophie Levesque has been guardian to her eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother’s death a few years ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is, though, they don’t know and have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator. Settling into their new life, Sophie is still afraid it’s all a mistake.
Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.
But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.
Will unravelling the mystery unravel Sophie and Mark’s promise of a future?
M – is for… Mainz —> Guest post by Author Iris Blobel :)
m
Thank you so much, Emilia for letting me contribute to your A – Z posts this year.
/Thank you, Iris, for your wonderful thoughts and facts
The generous Emilia has already posted reviews for a couple of my books, so here only a small intro. I was born and raised in Mainz, Germany, and moved to Australia in the late 1990s. I live near Melbourne with my husband and my two beautiful daughters. I write romance novels with emphasis on friendship and family.
So, M for Mainz.
Mainz_May2007_cropped
Mainz is the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatine. It’s located at the west bank of the Rhine River, approximately 50 kms west of Frankfurt. It was founded as a military post by the Romans in the late 1st century.
The things I miss and I’m proud of about Mainz are:
Carnival — Is a tradition that begins on 11 November but culminates in the days before Ash Wednesday in the spring. It’s heaps of fun and I have lots of wonderful memories.
Mainz_-_Rosenmontagzug2015_-_Parade_Masks
Johannes Gutenberg — Gutenberg was the first European to use the printing press and movable type in Europe (1439). His major work, the Gutenberg Bible (also known as the 42-line Bible), has been acclaimed for its high aesthetic and technical quality.
Mainzer Johannisfest — It was first held in 1968 and is one of the three major festivals in the city. The festival is closely associated with Johannes Gutenberg. The Mainz Midsummer Night takes place every year over four days in temporal proximity to St. John (24th June) and attracts more than 500,000 visitors.
ZDF — (my ‘old’ employer) is one of the biggest TV stations in Europe. One of my best jobs I’ve ever held J
St. Martin’s Cathedral — the 1000-year-old “Dom” is located near the historical centre and pedestrianised market square of the city is the site of the episcopal see of the Bishop of Mainz.
So – this is where I grew up! Despite my wonderful life here in Australia, I do miss my hometown and hope to go back for a visit soon again.
Where do you come from?
“Echoes of the Past” by Iris Blobel —> my VERY personal review :)
28805302
OK, I admit it. I am not your average romance-loving reader. Read my share – now I prefer mysteries. With a dash of romance. BUT this one? I received the Advanced Reading Copy, and – knowing and liking the Author’s writing a lot (I wrote about Iris Blobel’s other books on several occasions – here and here,   I also had an opportunity to interview the Author 🙂  ) – I started reading “Echoes…”
And that was it! I honestly do not remember last time I’ve read something so gentle, so dear – yet tugging on all the inner feelings strings with quite a strength!
It`s a story about the love that miraculously survives, even though it was born in the heart of a child, and did not have any conditions to grow through the years… Yet it remained strong, in that heart of little girl, teenager and then a woman, as if she needed to nurture it for both of them…
A story about true friendship, that survives everything, through the years, feeding only on memories of the childhood times. Memories and dreams, held strong in the broken heart of the father…
Story about the longing in the heart, a feeling of which a grown man has no clue at first, driven by curiosity perhaps, but which explodes full blast when he comes to the place he once loved, and which was brutally taken away from him.
It finally is a story about questions that need to be asked and answered, about priorities one has in ones life, about righting the wrongs, and going after the true calling of the heart.
And THIS is not your regular review, I realize that, but I can’t write even one word about the details of the book without the fear of revealing too much and therefore spoiling the beautiful book for an unsuspecting reader!
Absolutely amazing read!
