More Beginnings – by Iris Blobel ; excerpt and review :)

more beginnings2

♥♦♥  EXCERPT ♥♦♥

Zach Taylor’s young neighbour, Mia, let out a long sigh as she joined him on his front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool lemonade, he invited her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were weary of the unusual hot spell for the very southern Australian city.

With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and stared into the distance. “Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does it on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt.”

The dragon in question was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. There was no doubt that Mia liked school, and she enjoyed her classes. And even though English wasn’t her worst subject, it certainly was the toughest one, with Miss Peterson piling on homework one after the other.

Zach took a sip of his drink before he replied, “Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What’s that supposed to mean you’re ‘spoilt’?”

She lifted her shoulder in a slight shrug. “You know!”

Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”

Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”

Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip.

~~~Review~~~
more beginningsYet another brilliant romance by Iris Blobel! 🙂
Very engaging right from the start, with characters that have their flaws and past…
It is a book #2, but I’m sure it can be read as a stand alone (though you might be tempted to reach for #1 to fill in the blanks 😉 😀 )
I found three main threads in this book: one being the strong relationship between sisters, which is more like mother (Sophie)-daughter(Mia) at times; and which is put into a big test when Mia’s father decides to come back unannounced, causing… lets say, quite a storm in their lives. Does he really mean no harm? Is he trying to take Mia away from her sister? Or are there any other reasons? If I add the fact that Mia’s father’s existence was kept a secret… nope, not saying more.
Second thread – of course, the Baby!!! I have to admit as the plot progressed, I was getting more and more worried: will Sophie be OK? Will the baby be OK?!
And the tasty thread of Zach, and, well his love life. Or to be more exact – the question if his work (nope, not saying what it is) will ruin his chances to love and be loved…?
Phew. Hope I did not spoil anything for anyone 😀
Recommended drink: a glass of your favourite wine… for me – a rose of course!!! 😀
“Echoes of the Past” by Iris Blobel —> my VERY personal review :)
28805302
OK, I admit it. I am not your average romance-loving reader. Read my share – now I prefer mysteries. With a dash of romance. BUT this one? I received the Advanced Reading Copy, and – knowing and liking the Author’s writing a lot (I wrote about Iris Blobel’s other books on several occasions – here and here,   I also had an opportunity to interview the Author 🙂  ) – I started reading “Echoes…”
And that was it! I honestly do not remember last time I’ve read something so gentle, so dear – yet tugging on all the inner feelings strings with quite a strength!
It`s a story about the love that miraculously survives, even though it was born in the heart of a child, and did not have any conditions to grow through the years… Yet it remained strong, in that heart of little girl, teenager and then a woman, as if she needed to nurture it for both of them…
A story about true friendship, that survives everything, through the years, feeding only on memories of the childhood times. Memories and dreams, held strong in the broken heart of the father…
Story about the longing in the heart, a feeling of which a grown man has no clue at first, driven by curiosity perhaps, but which explodes full blast when he comes to the place he once loved, and which was brutally taken away from him.
It finally is a story about questions that need to be asked and answered, about priorities one has in ones life, about righting the wrongs, and going after the true calling of the heart.
And THIS is not your regular review, I realize that, but I can’t write even one word about the details of the book without the fear of revealing too much and therefore spoiling the beautiful book for an unsuspecting reader!
Absolutely amazing read!
About the book:
Into their final summer before graduating college, three childhood friends, Alex Makapulo, Lori Hanson, and Andy Taylor had each expected an uncomplicated transition to adulthood.
Alex had recently professed her love for Christ and is toying with the idea of leaving the Catholic Church and becoming a member of her best friend, Jack Page’s church. Jack wonders what is keeping Alex from being baptized and fully accepting a new life with Christ. Alex wonders the same thing and believes that she needs to be 100 % in her conviction before fully committing to a new Christian life. Like everyone she has doubts and wants to make sure she’s doing the right thing in her spiritual walk. Her new found beliefs disconnects her from her roommates and while they feel she is intentionally separating herself from them, to Alex, she is trying to figure out what is Christian and what isn’t.
For Lori’s twenty-second birthday, her grandfather Pete Hanson presented her with a summer vacation to England. While looking up various tourist spots, she meets and befriends Colin Watson, a British musician, online who then suggest they meet when she lands in London. They hit it off instantly but Pete is angry and believes that she only used him as a means to meet Colin. When he finds out that Lori met Colin online, he forbids Lori from seeing Colin entirely. Lori, who has fallen in love with Colin, is heartbroken. Pete threatens to leave England with Lori’s passport. Colin and Lori try to arrange meetups where they can see each other but Pete catches on. Lori takes this as a sign that it wasn’t meant to be. She unhappily finishes her trip with Pete and goes home vowing not to forgive her grandfather.
Andy reconnects with her old crush, Miles Webber and decides she wants a more meaningful relationship with him. She tells Alex about the situation and Alex truthfully tells Andy that Miles only wanted her for sex. This angers Andy and she walks out of the apartment.
Andy ends up walking to the coffeehouse and comes up with an idea to throw a surprise birthday party for Alex. She believes that if Alex and Jack were to hook up, the focus would shift from Miles and her. Andy spikes all the drinks for Alex’s party and leaves her friend while she goes in search of Miles. He shows up at the bar with another girl. In an effort to soothe her wounded ego, she goes home with someone else. When she wakes up the next day, she realizes she’s in bed with Alex’s young boss from the coffeehouse, David Roberts, Jr.
They return home from their trip with Alex asking Jack to baptize her. Andy confronts David and Lori both forgives and asks for forgiveness from Pete.
Australian Sport Stars Series by Iris Blobel
I’ve just recently posted a short interview with Iris Blobel, and a short bio – you’re welcome to check it out 🙂
Now a little bit about one of her Book Series – Australian Sport Stars
Love will find you_smallLove Will Find You (book#1)
Can their new love survive the scrutiny of the public eye?
After his father’s heart attack, Australian Football League player Tyson Gaspaldi takes his parents on holiday to a small place at the New South Wales coast.
One morning, following a surfing session, he comes across a crying woman on the beach. Everything about her intrigues him, and he can’t walk away. She’s not only sexy and humble, but, as he soon finds out, vulnerable as well.
It’s only been a few months since Katie Cassidy lost her sister in a car accident.
Still overwhelmed by the loss, a chance encounter on the beach with an attractive stranger awakens unexpected emotions inside her. She’s instantly drawn to his caring nature, but also his looks.
However, Tyson’s past quickly catches up with them, causing Katie’s childhood demons to return, and the road to romance becomes anything but smooth.
Excerpt:
Prologue
Tyson held the Brownlow Medal in his hand, but celebrating was the last thing on his mind. His fake smile was as much a lie as the last message he’d sent to Katie the day before. As a result, it was his mother who sat in the crowd amongst his teammates, his friends, the footy world, reporters, and whoever else was important—and not Katie. His gaze wandered around the ballroom, with all the round tables neatly positioned in nice rows. Each table was beautifully set with dinnerware, menus, and a floral arrangement. The TV screens on either side of him showed a close-up of the stage, and as he tried to protect his eyes against the bright lights, he watched them all, making toasts, their glasses filled with the best champagne, applauding his achievement.
The crowd settled and awaited a speech. His speech. Nervousness crept up in him as he stared into the audience. His throat burned as the acid in his stomach churned.
The Brownlow Medal was awarded to the best and fairest football player of the season, yet he didn’t think there was anything fair about the way he’d treated his girl.
Tyson Gaspaldi took a deep breath, unfolded his little note, and cleared his throat. The first word he focused on was her name, Katie. He blinked to refocus and thanked his mother as well as his family. It came effortlessly once he was past the initial hurdle and in only a few minutes he finished, held up his medal, and walked behind the stage.
Why had he said the things he had? Why didn’t he just answer her question?
A short time later, Tyson joined his friends and his mother at the table again.
“Congratulations, darling.” His mother took his face into her hands and gave Ty a kiss on his cheek. Only a few years ago, he would have been embarrassed by such open emotions in front of a crowd, but since his father’s death earlier in the year, he welcomed every sign of affection by his mother.
“Thanks, Mum.”
“Dad would be so proud of you.” Caroline Gaspaldi took a step back and gazed at him. Pride radiated from her eyes. “Look at you. You should wear a suit more often.”
His friends around the table gave him a quick clap on the shoulder and congratulated him before sitting down to proceed with the evening. Ty noticed his phone buzzing and with a flick of his finger, he scrolled down his messages. He stopped at Katie’s message from earlier in the day.
I don’t believe u!
With a heavy sigh, he switched off the screen, ignoring all the other new messages and the phone into his pocket. He took the beer in front of him and tried to concentrate on what the guy on stage was saying. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted a woman at the other table. She looked incredible in her shimmering silver evening gown. The décolleté of her dress revealed tanned skin upon which a delicate necklace hung. Her curly brown hair was pinned up in a ponytail which made her look very sexy. When she smiled at him, he winked at her in return.
“What are you doing, Ty?” his mother whispered into his ear.
Let me Love you CoverLet Me Love You (book#2)
Oliver Dempsey, pitcher for a Melbourne baseball club, loves the women, and they love him…
But he keeps them at an arm’s length, and when he meets Tamara, he’s unprepared for the attraction he feels for her.  Told by his coach that she’s off limits, only draws him in more.
Tamara Amis moved to Melbourne to find some distance between her past and herself…
With the help of her uncle, the coach of a Melbourne baseball club, she quickly finds a job, and a place to live. Yet, one meeting with the handsome pitcher stirs unexpected emotions that threaten to overwhelm her.
It’s Oliver’s injury that brings them together, but as they find out about each other’s pasts, how can they be ready to share a future?
Excerpt:
Sweat ran down Oliver’s back, soaking his shirt. He’d been on the field for a couple of hours, but frustration grew in him with every ball he missed. He placed his hands on his knees and took a deep breath, fixing his stare at the ground. For Pete’s sake, he was a pitcher, not a hitter, and well known for his fastballs as well as his perfect curveballs. Alas, he had neglected his hitting. Today, his swing was below average, and, unable to focus, he walked over to the bench where he spotted Coach Becker shaking his head towards him.
Pointing his finger back towards the field, the coach said, “Head right back out there, Oliver. You need to improve your hand-eye coordination. I want to see more, and better.”
Oliver cursed under his breath. “It’s not going to happen. My shoulder’s killing me. It’s been a long day.”
Coach Erik Becker rubbed his face.
“It’s not gonna happen today,” Oliver persisted.
With a grimace on his face, his coach nodded.
“Righteo, call it a day. But I want you back out there again in the morning, though.”
Oliver eased off his gloves and shoved them into his back pocket, before removing his helmet.
The coach gave him a gentle slap on his back. “I need you to concentrate more tomorrow. Remember what I told you. You need to focus on your proper stance as well as swinging the bat. Keep your eye on the ball as it comes towards you. Try to connect the bat with the ball, preferably at the fat of the bat. We have a game coming up soon. Go and deal with the shoulder issue. Check in for a massage.”
Oliver wiped his forehead with his arm when he noticed a woman standing in the coach’s shadow. Raising his eyebrows, he nodded towards her as to ask who she was.
Erik turned slightly. “Oliver, this is my niece, Tamara. She’s moved here from Perth. Tamara, this is Oliver.”
Oliver extended his hand towards her. “Nice meeting you.”
She ignored his hand and took a step back. Taken aback by her reaction, Oliver instinctively checked his hand for dirt or sweat. Questioningly, he looked at his coach.
Erik ignored the situation and simply said, “Have your shower and see me before you head off to discuss your training schedule.”
Nodding, Oliver took another quick look at Tamara. For a brief moment, their eyes met, and he was puzzled by her expression. It seemed as if her intense blue eyes were trying to hide something. The distant look in them was almost mysterious, and combined with her body language, he couldn’t help but get the impression something was wrong. She was very guarded.
With one last look towards Tamara, Oliver turned and left.
As soon as he got to the locker room, he peeled off his t-shirt. Pain shot through him the instant he lifted his right shoulder. He’d been ignoring the twinge during the training session, but knew he had to have it looked at. The fucking skateboard rider had nearly knocked him over the previous day when he came out of nowhere. Oliver hadn’t had a chance to move out of the way fast enough and slammed his shoulder into a post.
He slowly stripped out of his track pants before grabbing a can of Coke out of his bag. Leaning against the wall, he chugged half of the drink while enjoying the quietness around him. Everyone else was still out on the field trying to please Coach Becker. He choked a laugh, hoping his mates would put Erik in a better mood than he had. They had a few important games over the next few weeks before the season ended, and for the first time in years, the club was doing well.
As he walked to the showers, he thought about his training session and wondered whether his shoulder was to blame for the bad hits, or his lack of training. But who was he kidding, he always liked to throw everything he had at people, yet was hopeless in receiving anything thrown at him. That applied in baseball and in life. When he’d been to see his first baseball game as a kid in Los Angeles, he’d known he was born to pitch.
Iris Blobel is currently working on Book #3 in the Australian Sport Stars Series!!! Stay tuned! 😀
Leave a comment
one more romance… :)
This time it was
Few posts down, I’ve written my thoughts about the second book in the series, “Let Me Love You”, this one is Book #1 in Australian Sports Stars series. (Not the first time I do not start the series from Book #1 😉 Maybe this is my “thing” 😉 BTW, Love Will Find You is still free on amazon! 🙂 )
To the point though.
Two main characters – Ty and Katie, being at different points of their lives, meet… And if you’d expect me to say :”and the rest is history” – you’d be wrong. There is lots of going on! Katie – having just lost her sister – still grieving, she’d put high and strong walls around her heart, not letting herself to love and be loved… Ty – a football star – rich, but not spoiled, handsome guy, who might not know it yet 😉 but is about ready to settle down.
And as a good romance would want it, they meet, fall in love… And from this point it gets complicated… 🙂
Now there were few things that did not click with me – one being somewhat skimpy in details around Katie… As she was one of the main characters, it’d be great to read about what she likes/dislikes, her opinion on her job? relationship with parents?
And the second one – well. That’s my personal thing, but again it seemed like there was a lot of going back and forth, one word and “I’m taking my toys and going to my own playground” kinda thing, sometimes it made me wonder: how old are they again? The trust issues, I know, but… isn’t it the opposite to what happens in real life? I mean – to be frank: either there are trust issues and a person does not go to bed with another at all, or they fall in love so much that no matter what and who is talking – they keep a blind eye and do not believe it…
What I liked most (****SPOILER ALERT*****) were the few hilarious scenes that made me giggle 🙂
– one of Ty giving Katie a Birthday gift – a car (!) and the way she reluctantly accepts it, and all the dialogues around it 🙂
– and at the end – the bedroom proposal!
– and the overall, main theme, that true love wins, and no matter how many logs are thrown under the legs – love overcomes it all!
